In the 13th century the land around the mouth of the river Corrib was wrenched away from the O'Flahertys to build the Anglo-Norman town of Galway. This castle, built by the O'Flahertys c1500 has a commanding view of Lough Corrib. The citizens of Galway felt so threatened they erected a plaque over the western entrance to the town which read:
"This Gate was erected to protect us from the ferocious O'Flahertys!"
